If you’ve ever spent time working with leather, you know there’s something deeply satisfying about it. The way it smells when you cut into it, the weight in your hands, how it slowly takes shape under your tools — leather has a soul. It’s a material that rewards patience, care and practice.
When I started working with leather years ago, I was lucky to have people who shared their scraps and knowledge with me. Those small pieces were where I learned the most — how to bevel an edge, test a stitch or try a new dye.
That’s what From Our Workshop to Yours is about. We don’t like waste — every hide that comes through our Montreal workshop is special. So instead of letting the smaller pieces pile up, we’ve decided to make them available to other makers. Whether you’re crafting a wallet, a keychain or just starting to experiment with leather, these offcuts are the same premium materials we use in all our products.

Understanding Leather: A Quick Guide for New Makers
Not all leather is created equal. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you understand what you’re working with:
Full-Grain Leather
The highest quality available. It includes the entire grain layer of the hide — natural scars, wrinkles, and all. It ages beautifully, developing a rich patina over time. This is what we use for most Timber&Fins products.
Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Tanned naturally using plant-based tannins (like bark and leaves). It’s eco-friendly, firm at first, and develops character with use. It’s a favourite among traditional leatherworkers.
Top-Grain Leather
A step below full-grain, with the top layer sanded or buffed to remove imperfections. It’s a bit more uniform in appearance but still durable and high-quality.
Chrome-Tanned Leather
Tanned using chromium salts for softness and flexibility. It’s more resistant to water and staining and widely used in modern production. Unfortunately, this type of leather is not eco-friendly.
Genuine Leather
Despite the name, this is the lowest grade of real leather — made from the layers left after splitting the top grain. It’s often heavily treated and doesn’t age the same way. You will never see this in our workshop!
Each type has its place — it all depends on what you’re making. But if you’re just getting started, vegetable-tanned and full-grain leathers are great to learn with because they respond beautifully to handcrafting.
